Soldiers who weren't part of the nobility weren't affluent enough to afford armor, so they wore the next best thing: the brigandine. As thrusting swords were developed to be more effective against mail, plate armor was a necessity. Steel plates were riveted into a coat, creating a highly flexible garment that could be worn over a gambeson or mail. Sometimes well-heeled knights and noblemen wore very elaborate brigandines with the plate rivets affixed in complex patterns.The brigandine appeared in the closing years of the 14th century. It reached its apex of popularity in the 15th century and remained in common use into the next century.
